The Future of Arama They Didn't

the last flying ayu

Hi!

In the past year we’re sure you've noticed a lack in Arama's quality and overall activity. We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest. We started Arama They Didn't! nearly five years ago, and to this day it still surprises us what it turned into.

Through years of copyright issues on streaming and download sites, it became increasingly difficult to find Japanese media online which is the only way most of us is able to access it. The J-pop community as a whole was segmented and shrunk even more with the rise of K-Pop’s constant releases and breaking news. At Arama, we tried to create a place that encompassed it all and bring back that sense of unity we once had. We've shared nearly 20,000 articles, received almost a million comments and built a community that brought 19,000 people together with the single interest of Japanese Pop Culture.

LiveJournal has given us the opportunity to achieve what we originally set out to do. In 2012 we joined LJ Media thinking we would be further legitimized as a news outlet and hub for fandom, but after that seemingly went nowhere and swept under the rug. As we grew, our needs also grew but we weren’t sure how to execute them. Finally we decided it was time for us to go to take the next step and plan a revival for Arama.

Looking forward to this! I hope that the new site, etc. will not be abandoned like this LJ account though...

Entries for the past year have been so loosely moderated. Hope this rebirth mean tighter moderation on content of the posts and less trollbait "news".

the countdown reminds me of Jin's new official site ;)
good luck with the new home!
wish it will be more than just a copy paste from majide!? site like the last couple of years...

Cool! Looking forward to this!

I'm glad it's coming back, but it sucks that it won't be on lj. It's so much easier to use. You can't really talk to anyone on Twitter & Tumblr... and Facebook comments show up on your friends pages so it makes me not want to comment.

I wish there had been some Japan Night posts last month. I was looking forward to that, but there was nothing. :/

The main discussions will still take place on the actual website! Have you ever used Disqus before? It's really easy to use and basically the same as lj's commenting.

Yay :DDDDD
Sounds promising!
I'm always up for change and I can feel this new era will be amazing.

yay! missed this comm
tee_sama 28th-Jun-2014 06:43 am (UTC)
Well...it's probably not going to be as interesting as the ONTD format. There's a lot of sites like that already.

It was pretty obvious you guys lost interest with posts rarely being allowed which made people check the comm less and less...I used to check this site a lot back in the day long before became a member and now that I'm one I nearly never came here.

It's too bad, maybe if someone still interested took over the comm in the pas.

Oh well, what is, is! Good luck with your new stuff.

will miss you guys on lj but wishing you all the best for the new site! Looking forward to things to come :)

The most bizarre thing about this post is that I JUST started to come back to LJ to find more general J-entertainment news last week. Today, I was trying to find a replacement for arama (something like how it was here 4-5 years ago) but was unsuccessful. Came back from a night out to see this, and literally jaw dropped.

It's too bad it's not user generated (at least partially). Not sure I'll be interested in this because the sites on which I spend the most of my time are user generated tbh it's more fun, you feel like you really are in a comm and have some sort of role and you can share the things you like. I had tons of articles to share ( the latest one: this Japanese politician who was attacked with sexist remarks from other Japanese male politicians) but Arama slowed down at that moment.
I don't know... if the contents do really interest me it might work for me.
Otherwise I just wished Arama would be kept alive with a new design and newly motivated mods tbh.

Also, for a comm... Disqus is kind of annoying.

Yeah the disqus thing makes me think of Netizenbuzz and it's comments section madness lol. I'll still check out the new Arama though.
mizumi10 28th-Jun-2014 09:20 am (UTC)
agreeing with what made arama fun here which was the user generated content. but it is what it is now. since the new platform won't be user-generated, I'll be expecting quite much from your group of diverse writers.

Disqus is an okay commenting system. it can be annoying at times because of guest posting. other than that, looking forward to the rebranding in two days!

I don't understand what the problem with LJ is. I keep reading things like "LJ is so troublesome" etc. but how come?
To call it a thing of the past is not appropriate when you consider how many users certain other communities still pull... and what I (& I believe many others) loved about this apart from the user-generated content was to be able to get your own news feed (friends page) with all your desired contents in one place and be able to use the same account for different comms.

With arama moving out it'll become one more page to visit with yet another account to create. Sorry but I don't see any advantage for neither side :(
kate_firefly 28th-Jun-2014 07:34 pm (UTC)
i feel the same way!! what is so bad about LJ? sure, it's not as popular as twitter, tumblr, facebook. but it's the only real place where you can have real discussions and not just a ton of people "liking" stuff.

i don't think it's necessary to move arama off of LJ completely, but hopefully you guys are right and it will thrive at the new website. it's sad, but i was afraid arama was going to just shut down and not continue, so this is not so bad, i guess...
a_cheshire_grin 28th-Jun-2014 10:31 am (UTC)
I'm very glad that arama will be coming back, but I'm sad that it won't be on lj anymore. I think lj is still the best place for communities. But nevermind, I'm looking forward to the new site and I'll also follow you guys on tumblr.

Good luck with the "new" arama!

We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest.

girl, please. you are partly responsible for its demise by not bothering to do your jobs as mods. did you expect this place to still be active with one mod out of 10 active ones coming in to approve posts 2 weeks after they've been submitted and it's old news? it doesn't inspire much confidence in the future of the new website, either. but get that adsense money, I guess.
thewarpedmelody 28th-Jun-2014 12:56 pm (UTC)
True to a certain extent, especially the wait for approval of posts became longer and longer.
