The Future of Arama They Didn't

the last flying ayu

In the past year we’re sure you've noticed a lack in Arama's quality and overall activity. We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest. We started Arama They Didn't! nearly five years ago, and to this day it still surprises us what it turned into.

Through years of copyright issues on streaming and download sites, it became increasingly difficult to find Japanese media online which is the only way most of us is able to access it. The J-pop community as a whole was segmented and shrunk even more with the rise of K-Pop’s constant releases and breaking news. At Arama, we tried to create a place that encompassed it all and bring back that sense of unity we once had. We've shared nearly 20,000 articles, received almost a million comments and built a community that brought 19,000 people together with the single interest of Japanese Pop Culture.

LiveJournal has given us the opportunity to achieve what we originally set out to do. In 2012 we joined LJ Media thinking we would be further legitimized as a news outlet and hub for fandom, but after that seemingly went nowhere and swept under the rug. As we grew, our needs also grew but we weren’t sure how to execute them. Finally we decided it was time for us to go to take the next step and plan a revival for Arama.

Opening July 1st, 2014 on our 5th birthday!

meh. will probably forget about it without LJ update subscription.

so that's why I've noticed that Arama has been so slow with updates these past couple of months and I wondered why, sometimes news would be posted here several weeks after they were first reported. And I don't doubt that the lack of updates is 1 of the main reasons why more & more fans have left Arama...I used to check Arama everyday, but ever since the updates slowed down, I just don't come here frequently anymore. So I will have to agree with the user who posted before me, I think the mods are at least partially to blame for the recent unactivity of Arama, for taking so long to approve news, to the point that fans have had to go to other places for J-ent news. I think if the mods have stayed active in this community & continued to approve news more frequently, then I'm sure Arama would still be more alive & active today like it was before.

And it's partially true that more communities for Jpop & Japanese entertainment news have gradually become more inactive...including Tokyohive. But I don't think it's because fans are moving away from these sites, there are still plenty of sites dedicated to Jpop and Japanese entertainment, like Tokyohive, Jpopsuki TV, etc...but I think the problem is more to do with the fact that more J-ent fans are becoming less active as they were before it seems. I mean, there are still plenty of fans who visit Tokyohive, Jpopsuki TV and other J-ent sites on a regular basis, but they just don't comment in them as frequently anymore, so it feels like the communities are really quiet. Frankly, I have been guilty of that myself lately...I still go to Tokyohive, Jpopsuki TV, Japan Zone, Tokyotimes, & several other J-ent sites frequently, but I rarely post any comments in them, so latetly I've just been a 'silent' fan...and it just seems more J-ent fans are becoming more like the silent type, quietly enjoying J-ent and reading the news, but not commenting on anything much, it's not necessarily because they've lost interest in J-ent...apparently more Jpop & J-ent fans have just lost interest in commenting & being active, and not J-ent overall, that's what I've observed at least.
Unlike Kpop fans whom are always so active & vocal, so it just seems the Kpop community sites are alot more active in comparison.

As for the revival of Arama...well I have mixed feelings about it...on one hand of course I'm happy that you guys have decided to revive it, Arama was such a great community in the past, and it would be sad to have it die down completely. But on the other hand, I'm not thrilled with the new site format...I think it sucks to remove the user contribution function from the site, because 1 of the main reasons why I loved Arama was its function to allow members to find and contribute news to the site. By eliminating that, I think it won't be as exciting anymore...because for members to be able to post news they found themselves, it would cover a wider range of news and news would probably be posted more frequently. So I think it would be a better idea if users can still contribute news to the new site. But that's just my 2 cents worth.
I'll check out the new site of course, and hopefully the mods and writers of the new site will update more frequently, because the less frequent the updates are, the less fans will remain interested.

it's sad when LJ communities start to die because people come and read stuff, but never comment. sigh. lurkers are everywhere. i do feel that it's partly because much less people are using LJ nowadays, too, but still...

I do understand that people lost interest after doing this for so long and that lj maybe lacks requirement for community this big. But i am not a fan of other communities and have no account anywhere else(even tokyohive), primarily created my lj to be able to join here. I am happy that finally something is going on in here, also cheering for new platform thingie/site/place to work out. And i know it is selfish to wish for arama to stay here. But part of me still does...
That being said, Gambare guys! Went to see and clock thing really looks good and makes me excited! 2Days, 8hours, 10minutes and 20seconds...:)

I'm glad to see this! I've been following this site for almost five years and I'll continue to do so on this new platform. To be honest, the only reason why I even bother with LJ is for this community and now it won't be here, I see no reason to come LJ any more. I'm relived in a way.

I look forward to your new site. Your site is were i got to get Jpop and entertainment news that i can't find anywhere else. I'm glad you've decided on this, in the long run it will be better. For awhile there I thought this place died completely, but i'm glad to here it's moving.

can you keep this want alive? like post some stuff? somebody can keep a LJ for japan!?

is great the you guys want to keep this name alive, but can we have it here too?
hlynb93 28th-Jun-2014 11:27 pm (UTC)
I'm actually quite happy you guys are moving from LJ, I find the site way too complicated to use.
I'll keep on following on the new website, and with the addition of discus things will definitely be easier on me, and for people who are afraid the whole community vibe will be gone I think you shouldn't worry, discus allows people to reply to each other and have convos pretty fine, and it's quite simple to use.
As a suggestion for the website content, I was thinking maybe you guys could delve a bit more into Japanese culture, fashion and current affair as well as entertainment, maybe even have some editorials, reviews and opinion pieces, I think it would make the site more diverse and bring in more people, it could be interesting.

Japanese fandom (whats left of us) is just as stubborn and old fashioned as the industry itself.

I'm looking forward to your website. I think you guys will pull through~

Haha so true.... I'm so loyal to lj still and also I still don't know or understand the appeal of tumblr XD
mamoswine1 29th-Jun-2014 01:57 am (UTC)
I want to see its future; especially after reading most of the comments but I do agree at some point but whatever haters gonna hate. Can't wait to see the new site on July 1
