Arama They Didn't

The Future of Arama They Didn't

the last flying ayu

In the past year we’re sure you've noticed a lack in Arama's quality and overall activity. We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest. We started Arama They Didn't! nearly five years ago, and to this day it still surprises us what it turned into.

Through years of copyright issues on streaming and download sites, it became increasingly difficult to find Japanese media online which is the only way most of us is able to access it. The J-pop community as a whole was segmented and shrunk even more with the rise of K-Pop’s constant releases and breaking news. At Arama, we tried to create a place that encompassed it all and bring back that sense of unity we once had. We've shared nearly 20,000 articles, received almost a million comments and built a community that brought 19,000 people together with the single interest of Japanese Pop Culture.

LiveJournal has given us the opportunity to achieve what we originally set out to do. In 2012 we joined LJ Media thinking we would be further legitimized as a news outlet and hub for fandom, but after that seemingly went nowhere and swept under the rug. As we grew, our needs also grew but we weren’t sure how to execute them. Finally we decided it was time for us to go to take the next step and plan a revival for Arama.

Opening July 1st, 2014 on our 5th birthday!

We've announced this on social media but we weren't sure how to handle things here. We've thought long and hard about this and thought it would be for the best for us to move off LiveJournal and finally be in total control of everything. Even though LiveJournal itself has started a comeback of sorts, unfortunately there are still too many issues for us to consider keeping it as our primary base of operations. Arama would just continue to stagnate and not grow as a community.

There isn't really an active place solely for Japanese pop culture fans to call their home, most of them are defunct, and yes that includes TokyoHive
Our primary goal is to fill that void. We have a diverse team of writers who are very excited to start sharing news as well as fun and provocative editorials and opinion pieces. Unfortunately user-generated content would not work on our new platform. However, we will have a form where anyone can submit tips for news stories they would like to see published. New additions to the staff are always welcome! Details on that will be revealed in the near future.

Where you can find us

  • URL: Our new URL of course will be

  • FACEBOOK: Because of this rebranding, Facebook has been giving us trouble renaming our page. We’d appreciate if you liked the new one:

  • TWITTER: We’ll be keeping the same twitter which will be available with our new name:

  • E-MAIL: If you have any further questions, you can contact us directly at

  • TUMBLR: Eventually, everything posted on will be automatically cross-posted to tumblr for more reach.

We hope you'll stick with us and continue to support us as we figure things out at our new home!

What do you mean by the peak of their activities? The mods have never really taken care of this comm lol.
They'd even forget to change that summary-of-the-week design on the main page (they gave up like a few months after they did the new design), they didn't bother that much about all that Jpop vs Kpop wank posts and racist trolls UNTIL ppl call them out in countless of article, and that was the peak of Arama.

I know how difficult that is to take care of a website but lbr let's not act like the mods did their maximum for Arama. So no I think more could have been done.
Again 1 month ago at least 4 persons asked the mods if they could become mods because they have time and are motivated. They were ignored and instead, here we are closing Arama for a brand new website. Hmmm yeah. They could have at least hired the new mods but they didn't bother either.

Edit : you're a mod?lol oop.

Well that says how much mods are around that you didn't even realize you were talking to one. In fact I have no idea who the mods are here.

Lol you're totally right. I def know quite a few mods from ONTD or Omona but not Arama's...

The layout has been broken since the LJ media team added it and I was never able to edit it myself like all the other communities within the project. I had to email a member of LJ staff every week, which I did for 7 months. They just stopped replying to my emails. I didn't know why at first until someone informed me they all quit working for LJ.

I don't care to post all the BS every community went through with LJ media, I'm over it. Go chat with the omona mods if you want more insight on what happened behind the scenes. All the other community mods I met in San Fran abandoned LJ ages ago too, hm wonder why!

and I changed my username last year

Your username change "last year" is not really an excuse. Also, I've never known any mods here. I think you don't acknowledge much the errors you made in the past which makes all of you look worse in this post. This is too bad if you want to start anew with the support of this comm (which is the reason you made this post).

I understand there were real difficulties with LJ. There is also clearly a lack of comunication from your part with the members of this comm which is the reason poeple are being harsh on you, you can't deny it. If you had shared some of your thoughts (for example the lack of diversity in the contents : which is what Omona has done 1 or 2 years ago with a big poll to gather opinions about the way the comm needs to change, and what kind of change they -the mods- need to make) or problems about LJ with us then your new site would have been better received. I'm not going to repeat what others have said but you can clearly see how ppl feel like you abandonned the ship by laziness when there was still a public for it (esp considering that there are 100 comments in this post after this comm slowed down for months... that's saying a lot), and you making a miraculous come back with purposes that seem a little bit fishy for some (not for me though, IDGAF if you want to make money or not) is NAGL. So there is something lacking in the way you handled all of this.

Anyway. I wished you'd let this comm go on and appoint new mods and take care of your own site on your side. Or re-create a true Arama community in your new site which allows members to actively participate since that's one of the biggest quality of this comm (lol Disqus.... yeah.)

I mean I undertand the criticism is hard to receive but I am in no way surprised it happens that way, you could have seen it coming from a loooonggg time ago. Even if you have legit reason to do what you do, you def have some responsability with all the criticism you received.

1) i made every mod post except like two and posted the ffa every week. if people didn't catch on to who FREEFREE/GOTO was they have dementia sorry. you also replied to a lot of those posts as well as personally private messaged me to report users. but sure, ok. pleasure to meet you :) the other members of this community also had no problems locating the other mods because every time someone PMed them to warn a user they notified me or posted in aramatrolls

i made this post cause i didn't wanna leave without saying anything. the majority of our readers already left lj and arama ages ago and we obviously weren't expecting everyone to agree with it. if the few people still here want to support the new place then that's wonderful. if they don't then that's perfectly fine too

2) yes the lack of communication was definitely wrong on my part, never tried to deny that. the stats and overall traffic of arama decreased every month ever since we joined LJ media. stats wise the majority have all moved on from lj, why should the few who decided to stay be catered to? the loyalty is really sweet but i mean...

the money thing tho lol, that's really funny to me. that's not how websites work, but i mean for them to even think that in the start it's kinda hopeless.

3) back then, and at this time i do not want anything to do with livejournal. it would be a waste of time and resources. re-creating something like arama could only happen on a forum (which might happen in the future actually). trying to re-create this on another platform would be messy and would most def fail in my opinion.

4) it is tough but at the end of the day the positive support highly outnumbers the negative, so i think i'll live through this.

5) idk if this comment even covered everything you asked i just worked a 10 hour shift and arama opens in like 32 seconds #BRB

No you didn't answer the possibility of carrying on your own and leting us do what we want of aramatheydidnt.
Okay, you totally made me lose interest in your new website with that attitude. I hope you'll flop cause you totally don't deserve the loyal ppl in this post who are probably the main factor of Arama's success. Anyway let's end this convo, now I know that I won't gaf abt that new site because you are egoistic and pretentious. Bye.

No, read again the first sentence.
And fuck off.
asth77 18th-Jul-2014 08:46 am (UTC)
Lol your opinion doesn't interest me. You weren't the one I asked.
