The Future of Arama They Didn't

the last flying ayu

In the past year we’re sure you've noticed a lack in Arama's quality and overall activity. We'd be lying if we didn't say we lost interest. We started Arama They Didn't! nearly five years ago, and to this day it still surprises us what it turned into.

Through years of copyright issues on streaming and download sites, it became increasingly difficult to find Japanese media online which is the only way most of us is able to access it. The J-pop community as a whole was segmented and shrunk even more with the rise of K-Pop’s constant releases and breaking news. At Arama, we tried to create a place that encompassed it all and bring back that sense of unity we once had. We've shared nearly 20,000 articles, received almost a million comments and built a community that brought 19,000 people together with the single interest of Japanese Pop Culture.

LiveJournal has given us the opportunity to achieve what we originally set out to do. In 2012 we joined LJ Media thinking we would be further legitimized as a news outlet and hub for fandom, but after that seemingly went nowhere and swept under the rug. As we grew, our needs also grew but we weren’t sure how to execute them. Finally we decided it was time for us to go to take the next step and plan a revival for Arama.

Opening July 1st, 2014 on our 5th birthday!

We've announced this on social media but we weren't sure how to handle things here. We've thought long and hard about this and thought it would be for the best for us to move off LiveJournal and finally be in total control of everything. Even though LiveJournal itself has started a comeback of sorts, unfortunately there are still too many issues for us to consider keeping it as our primary base of operations. Arama would just continue to stagnate and not grow as a community.

There isn't really an active place solely for Japanese pop culture fans to call their home, most of them are defunct, and yes that includes TokyoHive
Our primary goal is to fill that void. We have a diverse team of writers who are very excited to start sharing news as well as fun and provocative editorials and opinion pieces. Unfortunately user-generated content would not work on our new platform. However, we will have a form where anyone can submit tips for news stories they would like to see published. New additions to the staff are always welcome! Details on that will be revealed in the near future.

Where you can find us

  • URL: Our new URL of course will be

  • FACEBOOK: Because of this rebranding, Facebook has been giving us trouble renaming our page. We’d appreciate if you liked the new one:

  • TWITTER: We’ll be keeping the same twitter which will be available with our new name:

  • E-MAIL: If you have any further questions, you can contact us directly at

  • TUMBLR: Eventually, everything posted on will be automatically cross-posted to tumblr for more reach.

We hope you'll stick with us and continue to support us as we figure things out at our new home!

ilovekonkon livejournal really is a thing of the past...28th-Jun-2014 01:06 am (UTC)
awesome! I follow you guys on twitter so I get quick updates on everything in realtime. I don't know about anyone else but I was seriously out of date with my j-entertainment news without arama! for me it has always been the best site because anyone could submit news at any time so the interests and bias of the people running it never affected the content. i know there's other sites like tokyohive but they're incredibly slow, I find their news unreliable and they often mistranslate vital information so I don't use them... things are changing quickly, but i have faith that you guys will stay true to the spirit of the community! you're moving up in the world and as your loyal members and followers we'll always be right behind you. never forget your humble beginning no matter how big the new arama becomes! here's to the rebirth of arama!

p.s. will the new site be easy to view for all browsers and computers and mobile users? i use a very old PC and my main browser is internet explorer (i know xD but my computer has trouble running other browsers) and a lot of other news sites have unnecessarily bulky layouts that slow me down and make me not want to visit.

Since nearly a third of our readers use mobile to read our posts, we optimized the layout so it would look correctly on a wide variety of monitors and browsers but I'll make sure everything looks perfect on Internet Explorer. Do you use any specific version?

I look forward to supporting you in the future.

and unfortunately what made this community used to be fun was its user-generated content. Doubt it will be as exciting in the new platform

sad to say but i agree w/ this D:

This is exciting! I'm surprised more places haven't moved away from LJ
supremeshow 28th-Jun-2014 01:52 am (UTC)

i'm glad you guys decided to keep on going
doinkies 28th-Jun-2014 01:56 am (UTC)
I'm really excited. One suggestion I'd have would be to have a tumblr account as well, you could post links to the articles on there and a lot of people use tumblr so it would give arama more exposure.

Yeah that's a great idea! we already secured a tumblr account with the arama japan name. Not sure when it's gonna be all set up but it shouldn't be too long after our official launch. Will add the url to the first post
curioustaiyo 28th-Jun-2014 01:59 am (UTC)
cool! one question though, what type of commenting system will you use? will i have to go through the hassle of making an account just for arama?
ruggio 28th-Jun-2014 02:09 am (UTC)
For now, we decided on using Disqus. It's a one time sign up and you can use the same account for any other site that uses the system like DLISTED, Reality Tea, Thought Catalog, Bloomberg, etc!

I'm sad it'll no longer be LJ, but I'm so glad you guys are still here! I was worried another community I love was going to be gone forever.
kemi_chan 28th-Jun-2014 02:08 am (UTC)
That's a nice initiative! When I saw this post the first thing I thought was that the mods were announcing the end of Arama. I'm glad I was wrong! Hopefully the new site will be even better!=)
rocketjenny 28th-Jun-2014 02:09 am (UTC)
As long as its a place that updates daily and a good comment section I'll be more than happy. It's scarce to find JPOP news anywhere that's not 90% idols so I hope the new site succeeds.
sandreen 28th-Jun-2014 02:31 am (UTC)
Just so we're clear, this means that this LJ comm won't be updated anymore, am I right?

Good luck. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
cocori 28th-Jun-2014 03:34 am (UTC)
Looking forward to this! I hope that the new site, etc. will not be abandoned like this LJ account though...
